How to Extract RAR Files Without WinRAR (3 Ways)
Open RAR archives on Windows, macOS, a phone or a locked-down work computer - no installation required, nothing uploaded.

WinRAR opens RAR files - but it is a paid tool with a nagging trial, and on many machines you cannot install anything at all. Here are three ways to get your files out anyway.
Why the workaround exists
The RAR compression algorithm is proprietary, so every tool that reads RAR has to license it. Decompression licenses are free, which is why plenty of tools can open RAR files - only creating them is locked to WinRAR. That asymmetry is your opening.
Option 1: extract in your browser
The fastest route on any machine, including ones where you have no install rights:
- Open the RAR extractor.
- Drop your
.rarfile onto the page. - Preview the contents, pick what you need, download.
The archive is unpacked by WebAssembly code running inside your browser. Nothing is uploaded to any server, which makes this the right choice for confidential files - and the only option on a locked-down corporate laptop with no admin rights. Works on Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS alike.
Option 2: free desktop tools
If you extract RAR files regularly, a desktop archiver pays off:
- 7-Zip (Windows, free and open source) - right-click, Extract Here.
- The Unarchiver (macOS, free) - automatic through Finder.
- Unrar (Linux CLI) - usually one
apt installaway.
Option 3: on your phone
Android file managers increasingly handle RAR natively. On iOS, the Files app does not - but the same browser extractor works in Safari: open the page, pick the file, download the contents into Files.
Split volumes and passwords
Multi-part downloads (file.part1.rar, file.part2.rar, …) rejoin automatically when you add every part before
extracting. Password-protected archives work too: enter the password in the options panel and decryption happens
locally.
After extraction, if you actually want the contents as a ZIP rather than loose files, the RAR to ZIP converter repacks them in one step.
